Aim and scope of the journal
The journal publishes original research papers, short communications, brief reports and reviews on scientific progress in farm animal biology. »Archiv Tierzucht« includes publications in quantitative and molecular genetics, genetic diversity, animal husbandry and welfare, physiology and reproduction of livestock. The journal addresses researchers, teachers, stakeholders of academic and educational institutions as well as industrial or governmental organisations in the field of animal production.
Manuscript submission
Manuscripts must be submitted via journal online submission and review system provided
by Editorial Manager http://www.editorialmanager.com/arch-tierz.
First-time users need to register and create a profile. There are few steps to submit a manuscript.
Follow the provided instructions carefully. Figures and Tables should be separated from the manuscript.
Review process
All submitted manuscripts deemed appropriate for consideration by the editors will be peer reviewed. Those not considered appropriate will be returned to the authors immediately. Papers in a numbered series will not be reviewed unless all parts are available for reviewing at the same time. Revisions made according to the reviewers’ and editors’ remarks should be resubmitted together with a detailed list and description of changes made.
Publication
The exclusive copyrights of the manuscript pass from the author/s to the publisher with the acceptance of the manuscript by the editor – including the right to reproduce the article or any part thereof. Before the manuscripts are printed the corresponding authors get proofs for correction and confirmation. There are no page charges or publication fees. The corresponding author receives a PDF-file of the printed paper.
Manuscript preparation
The authors are responsible for the preparation of the paper in a form suitable for publication. The manuscript should be written in clear, concise, grammatically and linguistically correct English language. Full papers are limited to about 15 pages in length including tables, figures, abstracts and references, Short Communications are limited to about 6 pages only and Brief Reports are limited to 2 pages only. Author/s must adhere to the instructions for style and layout detailed below. Manuscripts should be typed single-spaced using Arial or similar font at 13 pt. The text should be left justified. Pages must be numbered starting with the first page. Lines must be numbered consecutively throughout the text including references and headings of tables and figures.
Arrangement of the manuscript
Title
The title of the manuscript must contain:
- title of the contribution
- short title, if the title longer than 100 characters
- first name/s and surname/s of the author/s
- author's affiliations
Abstract and keywords
Each paper commences with a carefully prepared, accurate, informative abstract, in one paragraph, that is complete in itself and intelligible without reference to text, tables or figures. It should not exceed 250 words. It should state succinctly in short paragraphs the problem, the experimental method, results and conclusions but should not be overburdened by numerical values. References, tables or figures should not be included. Up to five keywords should be given. The full term for which an abbreviation stands should precede its first use (in parenthesis) in the text.
Introduction
An introduction should follow the abstract setting out the background and, if necessary, the history of the chosen topic. This should be sufficient to set the scene for the general reader and be relatively brief. The introduction should contain the aim of the contribution.
Material and methods
In this section the experimental design, samples and animals used as well as analytical and statistical methods are detailed. SI units must be used.
Results
In this section the main findings are precisely reported. Tables should be as comprehensive and simple as possible and arranged in vertical form without frames and lines. The same material must not be presented in tables and graphs. Tables should be numbered consecutively with arabic numerals in order of appearance in the text. Table titles should be clear, concise, and self-explanatory. References to tables in the text should be given as »Table 1«, and so on. Figures should be numbered consecutively with arabic numerals in order of appearance in the text. Please submit the data for figures in black and white. However, colour photos can be reproduced in black and white (with a possible loss of contrast). Figures printed in colour are subject to an added charge. Lettering should be large enough to be legible after reduction of the illustration, preferentially 11 pt lettering after reduction. Heads of the figures should be clear, concise, and self-explanatory. Figures are referred to within the text as »Figure 1«, and so on.
Discussion
The discussion should interpret the results and compare own results with knowledge already being in the literature. Redundant description of results should be avoided. The discussion contains conclusions and shows possible implications of the achieved results. The discussion may be combined with results.
References
Only the latest and most important references should to be used. References in the text should follow the Harvard system in style, i.e. name(s) followed by date, »Miller (2010)«; »Brown & Smith (1999)«; if there are three or more authors, »Jones et al. (2009)«, »Jones et al. (2009a, 2009b)«. Personal communications should be given as »Miller (personal communication)«. Unpublished data must be cited as »(unpublished data)«. Both citation types do not appear in the reference list. Conference abstracts and web references should only be cited if absolutely necessary for the article. Web references should be provided with a persistent identifier (e.g. doi, urn). References must be listed in a separate section at the end of the text in alphabetical order of (first) authors, giving the full title of the paper, the official abbreviation of the journal, the volume of the journal, and the first and last pages of the article. Articles in languages other than English should be used sparsely and an English translation of the title must be provided. The original language is indicated in brackets. Book references must include the chapter title, editors, book title, publisher, city and country of publication. They should appear as follows:
